Rodeo Exhibit

The Makawao Fourth of July Rodeo has been a remarkable success from its very beginning.  One Sunday in July of 1956, 2,000 fans (four times more than organizers expected and had seats for) watched paniolo from three islands battle it out at the first official Makawao Rodeo. To kick-start this groundbreaking event, the fifty cowboy competitors paraded into the arena on horseback to the sounds of the Star Spangled Banner, led by Harold (Oskie) Rice carrying the American flag and Levy Holomalia the Hawaiian flag.
